President Ruto Announces Emergency Response as Floods Devastate Parts of Nairobi

William Ruto has announced a series of emergency measures to assist families affected by the ongoing flooding that has hit parts of Nairobi and other regions across Kenya.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the President expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by the heavy rains, which have displaced residents, damaged homes and property, and disrupted livelihoods.

“I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are also with all those whose lives have been disrupted by this disaster,” President Ruto said.

The President assured affected communities that the government stands in solidarity with them and is moving quickly to support rescue and relief efforts.

To strengthen ongoing emergency operations, Ruto directed the immediate deployment of a multi-agency response team led by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, working in close coordination with the Kenya Defence Forces and other disaster response agencies. The team will coordinate rescue operations, assist affected communities, and relocate residents in high-risk areas to safer locations.

The government has also ordered the immediate release of relief food from the national strategic reserves to be distributed to families affected by the floods.

In addition, President Ruto announced that the government will cover hospital bills for victims currently receiving treatment in public health facilities due to flood-related injuries. Emergency humanitarian assistance will also be provided to families who have been displaced or are facing severe hardship.

Authorities at the national level are working closely with the Nairobi City County Government and other county administrations to ensure a coordinated response aimed at protecting lives and supporting affected communities.

President Ruto noted that the disaster once again underscores the need for long-term solutions to persistent flooding in urban areas. He said the Nairobi River Regeneration Programme will remain a key component of the government’s strategy to restore river ecosystems, improve drainage infrastructure, and reduce flood risks within the capital.

“These efforts will be strengthened and accelerated as part of our commitment to protecting lives, property, and the environment,” he said.

Heavy rains in recent days have led to rising water levels in several rivers and drainage channels in Nairobi, prompting warnings from authorities for residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to move to safer ground. Rescue teams continue to monitor the situation as relief operations intensify.
