ODM Faces Internal Turmoil as Sifuna Quits Amid Factional Disputes
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is grappling with internal conflicts followinga parallel meeting held by the Linda Mwananchi faction, signaling growing tensions ahead ofthe 2027 elections.
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna announced he will no longer serve under the leadership of Oburu Oginga, citing what he described as a betrayal of party ideals. Sifuna criticized the party's decision to cooperate with President William Ruto's government, claiming it contradicts ODM's core principles.
The Linda Mwananchi faction held its own convention at Ufungamano Hall, directlychallenging the leadership of the rival Linda Ground faction. During the meeting, members reaffirmed their commitment to remain within the Azimio coalition, insisting that they will actively work to challenge the current government in the upcoming elections.
Leaders at the convention also voiced concerns over the credibility of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). They demanded reforms, particularly regarding the use of technology vendors in managing electoral processes, to ensure transparency and fairness.
Tensions escalated earlier when police attempted to disrupt the meeting at Ufungamano Hall. The situation was eventually calmed after intervention by Babu Owino and his supporters, allowing proceedings to continue without further interruption.
Political analysts warn that ODM's internal divisions could affect its cohesion and electoral performance, as the party seeks to navigate leadership disputes while positioning itself against the ruling government.
