NPS Engages Boda Boda Riders in Major Road Safety and Security Outreach in Eldoret
Boda boda riders from across Uasin Gishu County gathered in Eldoret on Friday for a major road safety and community security outreach led by the National Police Service (NPS).
The engagement, held during activities surrounding the Eldoret National Show on March 7, brought together riders from all sub-counties in Uasin Gishu for a sensitisation session at the Eldoret Central Police Station.
The initiative aimed to strengthen road safety awareness while fostering collaboration between law enforcement and boda boda operators, who play a critical role in Kenya’s transport sector.
During the session, officers from the NPS educated riders on key safety practices meant to reduce road accidents and save lives. Riders were urged to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, including wearing helmets and reflective jackets, avoiding riding under the influence of alcohol, and ensuring they carry valid driving licences and insurance documents.
Beyond road safety, the police emphasised the important role boda boda riders can play in enhancing community security. Officers encouraged the riders to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities or crimes within their areas of operation.
Authorities also reminded members of the public that crimes can be reported through the NPS toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be shared anonymously through the #FichuaKwaDCI platform via 0800 722 203 or through WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.
The outreach also highlighted ongoing modernisation efforts within the police service, particularly the rollout of a Digital Occurrence Book (OB) system designed to improve efficiency, transparency, and service delivery. According to officials, the digital system has already been introduced in five police stations within Uasin Gishu County.
To support both safety and community reporting efforts, the NPS distributed 100 “Fichua Kwa DCI” branded reflective jackets to boda boda riders. The jackets are intended to improve rider visibility on the road while also displaying crime reporting contacts, effectively turning riders into mobile advocates for community safety.
The sensitisation programme was led by the NPS Deputy Spokesperson Dorothy Migarusha alongside officers from the Kenya Police Service, the Administration Police Service, and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The event was hosted by Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening road safety awareness and deepening collaboration between law enforcement and communities to promote a safer society.
