‘Mchele Babe’ Nabbed in Ruiru as Detectives Recover Stolen Electronics and Cash

Detectives have arrested a suspected member of a notorious “mchele” syndicate in Ruiru, recovering dozens of stolen electronic devices and valuables believed to have been taken from unsuspecting revellers across Nairobi and its environs.

The arrest, carried out by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), followed an intelligence-led operation stemming from a complaint lodged at Embakasi Police Station.

According to investigators, the victim had been socializing at a club within the capital when he was approached by an unidentified woman who engaged him and later hugged him after a game of pool. Shortly after the encounter, he began feeling dizzy and opted to leave the premises in her company before losing consciousness.

When he later regained awareness at his residence, the victim discovered that several valuables had been stolen, including two laptops (HP and Lenovo), a Samsung Galaxy S22, cash amounting to KSh168,000, and jewellery valued at KSh50,000.

Using forensic leads, detectives tracked down the suspect—identified as Jane Wangare Ndungu—to the Kihunguro area, where she was arrested at Havilla Apartments. A search of the premises led to the recovery of 40 assorted mobile phones, 14 laptops, and an iPad with a keyboard, some of which were positively identified as belonging to the complainant.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect is part of an organized criminal network that uses a stupefying substance commonly referred to as “mchele” to incapacitate victims. The syndicate then steals valuables and in some cases accesses sensitive financial information, fueling a thriving black market for stolen electronics.

The suspect is currently being held at Embakasi Police Station as investigations intensify to dismantle the wider network behind the scheme.

The DCI has warned members of the public to remain vigilant while in social establishments and to report any suspicious activity, noting a rise in such incidents targeting nightlife patrons.
