Hundreds of Vehicles Stranded After Heavy Rains Cut Off Kitale–Lodwar Highway
More than 800 transport vehicles have been stranded at Morpus in the West along the Kitale–Lodwar highway after heavy rains washed away sections of the road, leaving motorists and passengers stuck for more than 38 hours.
The flooding, which followed intense rainfall in the region, made the key highway impassable, forcing trucks, buses, and private vehicles to halt at the Morpus area. The route is a major transport corridor connecting towns in the North Rift region, and the disruption has significantly affected movement of people and goods.
Motorists reported long queues of vehicles stretching for several kilometers as drivers waited for authorities to restore access to the road. Some truck drivers said they had spent nearly two days at the scene with little information about when the road would reopen.
Passengers traveling on buses and public service vehicles are now facing food and water shortages after being stranded for extended hours. Many have been forced to ration the limited supplies they had while others are relying on assistance from fellow travelers.
“We have been here since yesterday morning and there is still no clear way forward,” said one driver, adding that the situation is becoming increasingly difficult for passengers, especially children and the elderly.
Local residents from nearby villages have begun selling food and basic supplies to the stranded travelers, though many passengers say the prices have risen due to the high demand.
Authorities are yet to give a clear timeline on when the damaged section of the road will be repaired and reopened. However, road engineers and local officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage and determine possible temporary solutions to restore traffic flow.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of key transport routes in the region during heavy rains, which often cause flooding and road damage, disrupting travel and trade.
