Governor Jonathan Bii Highlights Transformative Investments in Uasin Gishu Education Sector
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has highlighted the county government’s continued commitment to transforming education, citing multiple initiatives that are improving learning environments, boosting student welfare, and enhancing teacher welfare across the region.
Speaking during a series of education-focused events, Governor Bii emphasized that the county’s deliberate investment in education is having a transformative effect on learning and student performance. He noted that ongoing projects include the construction of 90 new model classrooms and 13 administration blocks, aimed at providing safe, modern, and conducive environments for both learners and teachers.
“These classrooms and administration blocks are designed to provide a learning environment that meets modern standards. They will not only improve academic performance but also ensure that our students and teachers can operate in safe and adequate facilities,” Bii said.
The governor also highlighted the success of the School Milk Initiative, which delivers milk to learners every Tuesday and Thursday. According to Bii, the initiative has contributed significantly to improving school retention, with enrolment numbers rising from 40,000 to over 52,000 learners. He noted that initiatives such as this help address malnutrition among learners while encouraging parents to keep their children in school.
In addition to infrastructure and welfare programs, Governor Bii confirmed that over 1,420 Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) teachers have been absorbed into permanent and pensionable terms. He described the move as a milestone in restoring dignity to teachers and strengthening the foundation of the county’s education system.
“These teachers are critical to shaping the foundation of learning in our county. By confirming them on permanent and pensionable terms, we are not only recognizing their dedication but also ensuring stability and continuity in early childhood education,” he said.
Governor Bii also participated alongside Oscar Kipchumba Sudi in the launch of the bursary disbursement for students from Kapseret Constituency, totaling KSh 76 million, at the Outspan Deputy County Commissioner’s Office.
He explained that the bursary fund is aimed at supporting students from financially challenged backgrounds, ensuring they can continue their studies without interruption. “This bursary fund is a lifeline for our students who need financial support to pursue their dreams. Every child deserves an opportunity to learn, regardless of their financial situation,” Bii said.
The governor also emphasized the county government’s focus on holistic education development. Beyond infrastructure and financial support, Uasin Gishu has invested in programs that improve nutrition, teacher welfare, and learning resources. Bii stressed that these interventions are designed to create a sustainable education ecosystem that supports learners at all levels—from ECDE to secondary school.
He further urged parents, teachers, alumni, and development partners to continue working closely with the county government. “Education is a shared responsibility. We call upon all stakeholders to support our schools—whether through mentorship programs, infrastructure development, or resource mobilization—so that we can provide a nurturing environment for our learners,” he said.
Governor Bii also praised the positive trends in school performance across the county, noting that the initiatives have not only increased enrolment but also improved retention rates, academic results, and overall student welfare. He highlighted that these achievements serve as evidence that strategic investment and community collaboration can drive sustainable growth in the education sector.
“The investments we are making are not just about buildings, funds, or programs—they are about empowering our learners, supporting our teachers, and creating a future where education becomes the bridge to opportunity for every child in Uasin Gishu,” he said.
He concluded by reiterating the county government’s commitment to ensuring that every learner has access to quality education and that the infrastructure, resources, and support systems are continuously improved to meet the needs of students and educators alike.
With the launch of the bursary disbursement and ongoing construction of classrooms and administration blocks, Uasin Gishu County continues to set an example in prioritizing education as a driver of socio-economic development and community empowerment.
