Government Pushes Market Expansion and Trade Access as Witeithie Project Takes Shape

The government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving livelihoods for small-scale traders and farmers through an ambitious infrastructure and trade agenda, highlighted by the ongoing construction of the Witeithie Modern Market in Juja Constituency.

During an inspection visit to the site, leaders underscored plans to build more than 450 modern markets across Kenya as part of a broader effort to support Mama Mboga — the thousands of small-scale vendors who form the backbone of local commerce. The markets are expected to provide safer, cleaner, and more dignified working conditions, replacing informal and often congested trading spaces.

Officials noted that the initiative is not only about infrastructure, but also about restoring dignity and economic stability to traders who have long operated under challenging conditions.

“This is about creating an environment where our traders can thrive,” one leader said during the inspection. “We are delivering on our pledge to ensure they work in decent and organized spaces.”

At the same time, the government highlighted progress on expanding international trade opportunities for Kenyan farmers. Authorities confirmed that duty-free, quota-free market access has been secured in key global markets including China, the European Union, and the United Arab Emirates.

The agreements are expected to open new export channels for agricultural produce, potentially boosting farmers’ incomes and strengthening rural economies. By removing trade barriers, officials say Kenyan products will become more competitive internationally, increasing demand and improving returns for producers.

The Witeithie Modern Market project in Juja Constituency is among the flagship developments under this program. Once completed, it will serve as a model for similar markets nationwide, integrating modern facilities such as proper sanitation, storage, and structured trading zones.

Residents and traders in the area have welcomed the project, expressing optimism that it will transform local business operations and attract more customers.

As construction progresses, the government maintains that the dual focus on domestic infrastructure and global market access will play a crucial role in driving inclusive economic growth, particularly for small-scale traders and farmers across the country.
