Four Convicted in Milimani Court Over 2015 Muchai Murder and Nairobi Robbery Spree

A Milimani Law Courts trial court has convicted four men in connection with the brutal killing of former Kabete MP George Muchai and his security detail, marking a major milestone in a case that has spanned nearly a decade.

Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina delivered the judgment after finding Eric Munyera Isabwa alias Chairman, Raphael Kimani Gachii alias Kim Butcher, Mustafa Kimani Anyoni alias Musto, and Stephen Astiva Lipopo alias Chokore guilty of multiple counts of robbery with violence and related firearm offences.

In his ruling, Magistrate Onyina stated that the prosecution had proved the charges beyond reasonable doubt, convicting the accused under Section 296(2) of the Penal Code for robbery with violence. The court also found them guilty of possession of firearms and ammunition without certification, contrary to Section 4(2)(a) as read together with Section 4(3)(b) of the Firearms Act.

The convictions stem from the events of the night of February 6–7, 2015, when a heavily armed gang launched a violent attack along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi’s central business district. During the assault, former MP George Muchai, along with his two bodyguards and driver, was fatally shot in an incident that shocked the nation and prompted widespread public outrage.

Court proceedings established that the gang not only carried out the deadly attack but also embarked on a series of robberies during the same night, targeting unsuspecting members of the public and robbing them of personal belongings amid the chaos.

In delivering the judgment, the magistrate noted that evidence presented in court showed consistent patterns linking the accused to the crimes. These included similarities in the number of attackers involved, the weapons used, the coordination of the operations, and the sequence of events, all of which strengthened the prosecution’s case.

Beyond the charges connected directly to the killings, the court also convicted the four in relation to additional robbery incidents attributed to the same criminal enterprise, highlighting the scale and organization of the gang’s activities at the time.

However, the court acquitted Simon Gichamba, citing insufficient evidence to conclusively connect him to the offences, in line with the legal threshold required in criminal cases.

With the convictions secured, the matter will now proceed to the sentencing phase. The four convicts are scheduled to appear before the court on March 18, 2026, when the court will determine appropriate penalties for the offences.

The verdict is being viewed as a significant step in the long-running pursuit of justice in the high-profile case, reaffirming the role of investigative and prosecutorial agencies in ensuring accountability for violent crimes and providing closure to the victims’ families and the public.
