Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lucia Wangui Thang’wa, mother of Karungo wa Thang’wa, Senator for Kiambu County.

In a heartfelt statement, Gachagua described Mama Lucia as a devoted matriarch whose life was marked by resilience, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to her family.

“Mama Lucia Wangui Thang’wa was a shining example of dedication and love. Together with her late husband, Stephen Kimani Thang’wa, she raised thirteen children who have gone on to serve society in diverse and distinguished ways,” Gachagua said.

He noted that her children include prominent figures such as Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa; Fr. Michael Thang’wa, a Catholic priest; Kihara wa Thang’wa, a global humanitarian; and Wambui and Wanjiru Thang’wa, both nurses, among many others who continue to contribute positively to their communities.

Mama Lucia, aged 93, passed away peacefully at her home after developing breathing complications. She was surrounded by her son, Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, and her caregivers during her final moments.

“Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and sacrifice. She nurtured and guided her children, instilling values that have left a lasting impact on her family and the wider society,” Gachagua said.

The former deputy president extended his heartfelt condolences to Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa, the entire Thang’wa family, relatives, and friends, praying for strength and comfort during this difficult period.

“May the soul of Mama Lucia rest in eternal peace, and may perpetual light shine upon her forever,” he added.

Mama Lucia Wangui Thang’wa is remembered as a pillar of her family and community, whose legacy of love, hard work, and commitment to family continues through her children and the lives she touched.
