Eldoret National Polytechnic Opens Baby Care Facility During International Women’s Day Celebrations

The Chief Officer for Gender and Social Protection, Marion Birgen, on Wednesday officially opened a Baby Care Facility during the International Women’s Day celebrations held at The Eldoret National Polytechnic in Eldoret.

The facility, launched on March 5, 2026, marks a significant step toward supporting students and working mothers while promoting a more family-friendly learning environment within the institution.

Birgen, who presided over the opening ceremony, said the initiative reflects ongoing efforts to ensure that women pursuing education or employment are not forced to choose between their responsibilities as mothers and their academic or professional goals.

The Gender and Social Protection Chief Officer noted that the baby care centre will provide a safe and supportive space where student mothers and staff can leave their children while attending classes or work duties.

“This facility is an important milestone in promoting gender equality and supporting women in education and the workplace. It will ease the burden on student mothers and working women, allowing them to focus on their studies and responsibilities with peace of mind,” she said.

Birgen was accompanied by the Chief Principal of The Eldoret National Polytechnic, Dr Charles Koech, who welcomed the initiative and described it as a progressive step toward inclusivity within the institution.

Dr Koech said the facility demonstrates the institution’s commitment to creating a supportive environment that enables all learners, especially young mothers, to complete their studies successfully.

He noted that many female students face challenges balancing academic commitments with childcare responsibilities, adding that the new centre will significantly improve their learning experience.

The launch formed part of the institution’s activities to mark International Women’s Day, a global celebration that recognizes the achievements of women and advocates for gender equality.

The event brought together students, staff, and county officials who reiterated the importance of empowering women through education, support systems, and inclusive policies.
