The President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Erick Rutto, represented the Chamber at the 2026 COMESA Investment Forum 2026, where leaders from across Eastern and Southern Africa convened to advance strategies for boosting regional trade and investment.
A central highlight of the forum was discussions around the proposed Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa Common Investment Area, a regional framework designed to create a more predictable, transparent, and harmonized investment climate among member states. The initiative aims to simplify cross-border investments, strengthen investor protections, and reduce regulatory bottlenecks that have historically limited capital flows within the region.
Participants at the forum emphasized that the Common Investment Area could significantly enhance the region’s appeal as a unified investment destination, making it easier for both local and international investors to operate seamlessly across borders.
Dr. Rutto took part in high-level panel discussions, where he contributed to conversations on unlocking private sector participation under the proposed framework. He highlighted the importance of policy alignment and trust-building mechanisms in driving investor confidence across member countries.
He also underscored the critical role of African financial institutions in supporting regional trade, noting that banks across the continent are key enablers of cross-border commerce. By providing tailored financing solutions and facilitating trade settlements, these institutions can help accelerate the realization of a fully integrated investment space.
The forum concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to fast-track the implementation of policies that support regional integration, with the Common Investment Area seen as a cornerstone for future economic growth and competitiveness in the COMESA bloc.
