David Maraga Storms Eldoret, Accuses Government of Financial Mismanagement

Presidential hopeful David Maraga electrified a crowd in Eldoret on  Friday , delivering a fiery speech accusing the current government of mismanaging public funds and failing ordinary Kenyans.

Addressing supporters, Maraga, the former Chief Justice and standard‑bearer of the United Green Movement Party, urged citizens to join him in prayer before outlining what he described as the government’s failure to safeguard the nation’s finances. He lambasted the administration of William Ruto, alleging billions of shillings had been lost under its watch — figures he cited as evidence of fiscal irresponsibility.

“Today, what we have seen in the news is billions that have been lost because of this situation,” Maraga said, accusing government officials of enriching themselves at the expense of public services. He asserted that reclaiming these funds would help finance essential public needs, including medicine for hospitals and food security.

Maraga’s remarks come amid a broader campaign in which he has consistently criticised the Ruto administration’s record on governance and economic stewardship. In recent months he has condemned government policies — including controversial legal reforms — as threats to free speech and democratic space, and warned against attempts to alter constitutional safeguards such as presidential term limits.

The Eldoret speech also featured direct appeals for financial support from the crowd, with Maraga promising to serve as “your judge” if backed by citizens. He emphasised that reclaiming what he described as misappropriated funds would allow Kenya to meet pressing needs and improve service delivery.

Political analysts say Maraga’s campaign is tapping into widespread public dissatisfaction with the economy and governance, particularly among voters frustrated by the high cost of living, unemployment, and allegations of corruption under the current administration. Such sentiments have fuelled opposition movements and increased political debate as Kenya approaches the 2027 general elections,

Supporters at the Eldoret rally cheered widely as Maraga spoke of accountability and change. However, critics argue his rhetoric may not be enough to sway a broad electorate without clear policy proposals and a cohesive national strategy.

As the presidential contest gains momentum, Maraga faces competition from other candidates across the political spectrum. But his continued vocal critique of the government’s performance highlights the deepening political divide and rising public expectations ahead of next year’s ballot.
