CAMPUS FREEDOM COMES WITH RESPONSIBILITY

 By Christine Awino

The first taste of freedom on campus is intoxicating. No curfews, no parents, no one monitoring your choices. For many students, this independence feels like liberation. It is the moment they believe adulthood has finally arrived. The thrill of staying out late, spending money without explanation, and making personal decisions without interference is exhilarating.

But freedom without responsibility quickly becomes chaos. Missed lectures, reckless spending, and unhealthy habits creep in. The illusion of soft life often masks the reality of poor decisions. Students discover that independence is not just about doing what you want it’s about managing the consequences of those choices. The freedom to skip class comes with the consequence of failing exams. The freedom to spend recklessly comes with the consequence of financial stress.

Some students thrive, building routines and learning independence. They budget carefully, attend classes, and grow into responsible adults. Others struggle, discovering that freedom demands discipline. The campus becomes a testing ground for adulthood, where mistakes are costly but lessons are invaluable. It is here that students learn that responsibility is not imposed it is chosen.

Stories abound of students who learned the hard way failing exams, losing money, or damaging relationships. Yet these lessons are part of growth. Freedom is not a gift; it is a responsibility that requires maturity. The campus environment, with its mix of liberty and accountability, becomes the perfect laboratory for learning how to manage life.

Campus freedom is not about escaping rules; it’s about learning to balance liberty with accountability. That balance defines maturity, and it is the true test of whether students are ready for the world beyond campus. The sooner students embrace responsibility, the smoother their transition into adulthood becomes.
