Women Power :Hon. Omanyo Takes the Helm at ODM

In a landmark decision celebrated by supporters as a breakthrough for women’s leadership in Kenyan politics, Catherine Nakhabi Omanyo has been appointed Acting Secretary-General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). The move, made official today by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), places one of the most influential administrative roles in the opposition party in the hands of a woman at a pivotal moment ahead of Kenya’s 2027 general election.

Hon. Omanyo succeeds Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, stepping into a role that demands strategic oversight of party operations, mobilisation and electoral preparation. Her elevation is widely seen within ODM circles as recognition of her loyalty, resilience and exemplary performance as Deputy Secretary-General — a position she has held since September 2023.

“With hard work, dedication and unwavering commitment to the people of Kenya, Hon. Omanyo has proven she embodies the values and vision that ODM stands for,” said a senior party official, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Omanyo, aged 47, is no stranger to national leadership. She currently serves as the Busia County Woman Representative, a seat she won in a landslide victory in the 2022 general election on an ODM ticket. In Parliament, she has carved out a reputation as a vigorous advocate for gender equality, menstrual health, and poverty alleviation — championing policies that resonate with Kenya’s grassroots and vulnerable populations.

Her influence, however, extends far beyond the hallowed halls of the National Assembly.

A seasoned humanitarian, Omanyo is the founder and director of Imprezza Academy (International School for Champions) in Busia — a tuition-free learning institution dedicated to orphans and children affected by HIV/AIDS. Under her leadership, Imprezza Academy has become a beacon of hope for countless families, while her broader community work includes supporting widows and vulnerable households across Busia County. Her initiatives have overseen the construction of more than 200 houses in various sub-counties, addressing one of the most basic needs of the poorest residents.

Her roots in community activism trace back nearly two decades. In 2006, Omanyo launched anti-jigger campaigns aimed at restoring dignity and health in rural communities long neglected by mainstream development efforts. That early work laid the foundation for a career defined by confronting entrenched social challenges with practical, compassionate solutions.

Hon. Omanyo’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2025, she was honoured with the Thamani Award for leadership in girl-child education, and recognised by the Isuzu Women Council for her steadfast gender advocacy. She was also ranked among Kenya’s Top 10 Most Impactful Women by Timely Kenya and received the Young Boss Humanitarian Award in New York in 2020 — accolades that underscore her influence both at home and abroad.

Born on July 7, 1978, in Busia County and raised by a single mother who worked as a nanny, Omanyo’s life story is one of grit, determination and service. Her rise from humble beginnings to the upper echelons of political leadership reflects not only personal tenacity but a deep, unshakeable belief in the power of transformative public service.

As Acting Secretary-General, Omanyo inherits a party at a crossroads — navigating internal realignments and preparing for a fiercely contested election cycle. Yet many within ODM believe that her fearless style, grassroots grounding and organisational acumen make her uniquely equipped to steer the party toward unity and electoral success.

“Hon. Omanyo is not just equal to the task — she is built for it,” said one senior woman leader in the party. “Her appointment sends a powerful message about the future of leadership in Kenya.”

Whether viewed as a bold strategist, a community champion, or a symbol of women’s rising influence in politics, Catherine Nakhabi Omanyo’s ascension is shaping up to be one of the defining stories of Kenya’s 2026 political landscape.
