KFS, Green Generation Initiative Explore Collaboration on Forest Restoration
The Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF), Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, on Tuesday hosted a courtesy visit by the Green Generation Initiative (GGI) delegation led by its Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Elizabeth Wathuti, to explore potential areas of collaboration in forest restoration, protection, and conservation across Kenya.
The meeting, held at the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) headquarters, focused on strengthening partnerships aimed at safeguarding critical forest ecosystems while promoting sustainable livelihoods for forest-adjacent communities.
During the discussions, GGI highlighted its ongoing and past restoration efforts in key forest and water tower landscapes, including Kimakia Forest, Chyulu Hills, Sabaki Estuary, Karima Forest, and the Mau Forest Complex. The organization also shared plans to establish a one-million-seedling-capacity nursery under the Mau Forest Complex Integrated Conservation and Livelihood Improvement Programme (MFC-ICLIP), a move expected to significantly boost large-scale ecosystem restoration efforts in the region.
Mr. Lemarkoko commended GGI for its impactful, community-centered approach to conservation, noting that such partnerships are critical in addressing deforestation, forest degradation, and climate change. He reaffirmed KFS’s commitment to working closely with like-minded organizations to restore degraded forest landscapes and protect vital water catchment areas.
The Kenya Forest Service emphasized that collaboration with civil society organizations such as GGI plays a key role in scaling up restoration initiatives while ensuring that local communities are actively involved and benefit from conservation efforts.
The meeting was also attended by the Commandant of the Kenya Forest Service, Mr. Mohammed A. Mohammed; the Personal Assistant to the CCF, Mr. Evans Maneno; and other officials from the Green Generation Initiative.
The engagement underscored a shared commitment by KFS and GGI to building resilient forests, protecting Kenya’s water towers, and empowering communities to secure environmental sustainability for present and future generations.
