Uasin Gishu County Appoints Youth Activist KAPKENO as Anti-Drug Abuse Ambassador
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed the county’s commitment to combating drug and substance abuse among young people by appointing youth activist KAPKENO as a champion and ambassador against the vice.
The move follows KAPKENO’s bold 48-hour protest atop a tree at Nandi Park, an act that captured public attention and sparked widespread conversations on the growing threat of drug abuse to Kenya’s youth. The unconventional demonstration drew support from members of the public, civil society, and online communities, highlighting concerns over the silent impact of drugs on young people’s futures.
Speaking during a meeting held in Eldoret, Governor Bii hosted KAPKENO alongside a team of influential content creators, comedians, and masters of ceremony, noting that innovative and courageous advocacy is critical in reaching young audiences.
“Drug abuse continues to quietly steal the dreams and potential of countless young people. We must support bold actions that raise awareness and drive meaningful change,” the governor said.
As part of the initiative, KAPKENO was formally attached to the Uasin Gishu County Department of Health, where he will work with health officials to champion anti-drug campaigns, promote prevention strategies, and encourage youth engagement in positive social initiatives.
The Uasin Gishu County Alcoholic Drinks Control Board (ADCB) Director, Koiya Arap Maiyo, applauded the move, saying it will significantly strengthen the county’s fight against illegal alcohol and substance abuse.
“This partnership will enhance community awareness and support our ongoing efforts to eliminate illicit brews that endanger lives, especially among the youth,” Maiyo said.
Governor Bii emphasized that the county government will continue to strengthen partnerships with creatives, influencers, and community leaders to amplify awareness on drug and substance abuse, while also supporting rehabilitation and counseling programs.
The appointment is expected to boost youth-led advocacy efforts and enhance the county’s outreach to young people through platforms they readily engage with.
Uasin Gishu County has in recent years intensified efforts to address drug abuse through public sensitization campaigns, school-based programs, and collaboration with national agencies.
The county leadership called on residents, parents, educators, and stakeholders to join hands in protecting young people from drugs and illegal alcohol, ensuring a healthier future for the next generation.
