Education scholar Prof. Okumu Bigambo has urged parents and students to place education at the top of their priorities as the country ushers in 2026, saying learning remains the surest pathway to personal advancement and national development.

Speaking to this newspaper, Prof. Bigambo said the beginning of a new year offers a timely opportunity for families and learners to take stock of their academic goals and recommit themselves to education amid growing social and economic pressures.

He underscored the role of parents in shaping learners’ success, noting that meaningful parental involvement goes beyond payment of school fees to include close monitoring of academic progress, moral guidance and the creation of a supportive learning environment at home.

“Schools cannot work in isolation. When parents are actively involved, learners are more focused, disciplined and motivated to succeed,” he said.

The professor challenged students to approach the new year with renewed discipline, consistency and determination, urging them to set clear academic targets early and remain focused throughout the year. He cautioned learners against engaging in activities that undermine education, including drug abuse, indiscipline and excessive use of digital platforms.

Speaking to this newspaper, Prof. Bigambo said education remains the most sustainable investment families can make, even as households grapple with economic hardships.

He also called on learners to cultivate a strong reading culture and to seek guidance from teachers and mentors, noting that academic excellence is built on resilience, patience and hard work.

At the policy level, the educationist appealed to government and other stakeholders to continue strengthening the education sector through reforms that enhance access, quality and equity. He observed that a well-educated population is critical to innovation, economic growth and social stability.

Prof. Bigambo further urged schools to balance academic instruction with character development, leadership training and life skills, saying education should produce responsible citizens capable of contributing positively to society.

As schools reopen across the country, his message comes at a time when many families are navigating rising living costs and shifting social dynamics. His remarks serve as a reminder that, despite prevailing challenges, education remains a powerful tool for transforming lives and securing a better future.

With 2026 now underway, Prof. Bigambo’s call highlights the shared responsibility of parents, students and stakeholders in safeguarding education as a national priority.
