Women inmates at Kapenguria Women’s Prison were treated to a day of warmth, encouragement, and renewed hope as Smile and Shine Girls Foundation paid them a courtesy visit aimed at restoring dignity and promoting empowerment among incarcerated women.

The visit, held as part of the foundation’s community outreach efforts, focused on dialogue, emotional support, and reflection, reinforcing the message that incarceration does not diminish a woman’s worth, humanity, or potential. Through shared conversations and moments of encouragement, the foundation sought to remind the inmates that they remain valued members of society.

Guided by its vision of building thriving communities through sustainable development, good governance, and access to quality services, Smile and Shine Girls Foundation emphasized compassion and inclusion for marginalized women.

The foundation’s founder, Edwin Ritamoi, accompanied the team and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to women empowerment, education, mental wellness, and inclusive development. He noted that supporting vulnerable women, including those in correctional facilities, remains central to the foundation’s mission.

The team was warmly received by Inspector Ann, who welcomed the visitors and thanked them for dedicating time to engage and support the women inmates. Although the Officer in Charge, Nancy Chepkonga, was not present during the visit, she conveyed her appreciation, acknowledging the positive impact such engagements have on the morale and overall well-being of inmates.

The women inmates expressed heartfelt gratitude to the visiting team, saying the visit made them feel seen, valued, and remembered during a difficult period of their lives. Many described the engagement as uplifting and motivating, offering emotional relief and renewed confidence.

During an evening interaction, Advocate Kevin Kachapin commended Smile and Shine Girls Foundation for its dedication to community service and encouraged the organization to continue uplifting vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Smile and Shine Girls Foundation works across several thematic areas, including youth and women empowerment, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual hygiene management, education and mentorship, good governance, and advocacy against harmful practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM). The Kapenguria Women’s Prison visit forms part of the foundation’s broader mission to improve the quality of life for marginalized communities through targeted and compassionate interventions.
