Potato Processing Machines Installed at Ainabkoi Plant, Boosting Value Addition in Uasin Gishu
Uasin Gishu County has marked a significant milestone in agricultural value addition following the delivery and installation of potato processing machines at the Ainabkoi plant. The facility is expected to support the production of potato chips and crisps, strengthening the county’s potato value chain.
The installation, which is currently underway, will enhance post-harvest handling through local grading, processing, and packaging. County officials say the initiative will help reduce post-harvest losses while improving the quality and marketability of potatoes produced by local farmers.
Speaking on the development, Governor Jonathan Bii said the project is aimed at empowering farmers by providing a reliable market for their produce and minimizing dependence on middlemen. He noted that value addition at the local level would lead to improved farm-gate prices and more stable incomes for farmers.
“The Ainabkoi processing plant is a game changer for our potato farmers. By processing potatoes locally, we are ensuring farmers earn more from their hard work while reducing losses that occur after harvest,” Governor Bii said.
The governor added that the facility is also expected to create employment opportunities, particularly for youth and women, through processing, packaging, transportation, and related agribusiness activities.
Uasin Gishu is one of the leading potato-producing counties in the region, and the county government has prioritized value addition as part of its agricultural transformation agenda. Officials say the potato processing plant aligns with broader efforts to promote agro-industrialization, improve food security, and drive sustainable economic development.
Once fully operational, the Ainabkoi plant is expected to serve farmers from across the county, positioning Uasin Gishu as a key hub for processed potato products in the region.
