Moiben Member of Parliament Prof. Phyllis Bartoo has officially flagged off the Food for Education Programme for the 2026 school calendar, reaffirming her commitment to improving school retention, learner wellbeing, and educational outcomes in the constituency’s informal settlements.

Speaking during the launch, Prof. Bartoo emphasized that education can only be truly transformative when children are supported to learn in dignity and free from hunger. She noted that the programme is designed to keep pupils in school, ease the burden on families, and restore hope among vulnerable learners.

“Education has the power to transform lives, but only when children are able to stay in school, learn with dignity, and dream without hunger,” said Prof. Bartoo. “Through this initiative, we are not only investing in education but also in the wellbeing and future of our pupils.”

The Food for Education Programme will provide regular meals to school-going children across targeted schools in Moiben, with a focus on areas where poverty and food insecurity have previously contributed to absenteeism and dropout rates. According to education stakeholders present at the event, access to school meals has proven to significantly improve concentration, attendance, and overall academic performance.

Prof. Bartoo added that feeding learners is a long-term investment in the nation’s human capital. “When we feed a child, we nourish their mind, protect their future, and strengthen our nation,” she said.

Local education officials, parents, and community leaders welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful as schools prepare for the 2026 academic year. They expressed optimism that the programme would help create a supportive learning environment where every child has a fair chance to succeed.

The Food for Education Programme is part of broader efforts by the Moiben leadership to address social inequalities through education, health, and community-based interventions.
