Kinyanjui Warns Against Politicising International Justice for Personal Gain
Cabinet Secretary for Investment, Trade and Industry Lee Kinyanjui has strongly criticised remarks attributed to a senior Democratic Congress Party (DCP) leader calling for United States intervention to investigate Kenya’s leadership over alleged links to funds associated with the Minnesota fraud case.
In a statement issued on Monday, Kinyanjui described the call as reckless, ill-advised and dangerous, warning that such actions risk undermining Kenya’s sovereignty and international standing for the sake of political vendettas.
“While the mandate of investigations does not rest with me, the sheer lack of wisdom displayed in failing to distinguish between legitimate political contestation and matters of grave international consequence is deeply alarming,” Kinyanjui said.
The Cabinet Secretary noted the irony that the allegations were being raised by a leader who previously served as a running mate within the very political establishment now under attack.
“How can a leader seek to drag his own country into international controversy merely to settle personal or political scores?” Kinyanjui posed. “This brand of politics is retrogressive, dangerous, and rooted in short-term thinking rather than national interest.”
He cautioned that inviting foreign governments to intervene in domestic political disputes could have far-reaching economic and diplomatic repercussions, including investor uncertainty and strained bilateral relations.
“These are not games. Matters involving international investigations, financial crimes, and foreign jurisdictions carry potentially catastrophic consequences if handled carelessly,” he said.
Kinyanjui urged political leaders to exercise restraint, responsibility and patriotism, emphasizing that national interest must always supersede personal ambition.
“Political disagreements are natural in a democracy,” he added, “but there are lines that must never be crossed. Leadership demands maturity, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the country’s dignity.”
He concluded by warning that some matters require prudence and restraint, noting that not every tool available should be used in the pursuit of political advantage.
