Incoming Kabete MP James Wanjohi Calls for Mount Kenya Unity at Kamunya Burial
Incoming Kabete Member of Parliament James Wanjohi has called for unity among leaders and residents of the Mount Kenya region, saying the community must come together to safeguard its political and economic interests.
Mr. Wanjohi made the remarks while addressing mourners at the burial of Mr. Stephen Kamunya, the father of former Mungiki leader and political figure Maina Njenga. The ceremony attracted a large crowd, including political leaders, community elders, and supporters from across the region.
The incoming legislator, a businessman-turned-politician, arrived at the ceremony accompanied by more than 1,000 supporters, underscoring his growing influence in Kabete and beyond. The show of solidarity was also seen as a gesture of support to Mr. Njenga and his family during the funeral.
In his address, Mr. Wanjohi said the Mount Kenya region is at a defining moment that requires unity of purpose.
“If there is a time when the Mountain ought to be united more than ever before, it is now,” he said, urging leaders to set aside personal and political differences for the sake of the wider community.
He warned that internal divisions could weaken the region’s bargaining power at the national level, noting that unity remains key to political influence, economic growth, and social stability.
Mr. Wanjohi further called on leaders to embrace inclusive leadership and collaborate in addressing shared challenges, including economic empowerment, job creation for the youth, and sustainable development.
The burial ceremony was marked by calls for peace, cohesion, and mutual respect, with several speakers urging the community to honor the late Mr. Kamunya by promoting harmony and understanding.
Mr. Wanjohi’s remarks add to the growing discourse on unity within the Mount Kenya region, a theme that continues to feature prominently as political realignments take shape ahead of future elections.
