Dedan Kimathi Foundation Backs KMC Tree Nursery Drive with Seeds and Potting Materials

The Dedan Kimathi Foundation has pledged support for tree seedling production at the Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) following a visit by its Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Evelyn Kimathi, to the commission’s Athi River premises on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

Ms. Kimathi toured the facility at the invitation of KMC Managing Commissioner Maj. Gen. Jattani Gula and held discussions with the KMC team, including Deputy Managing Commissioner Brig. C.K. Nyakundi, focusing on environmental conservation and tree growing initiatives.

The visit aligned with the National Tree Growing and Forest Restoration Campaign, which targets 30 per cent tree cover nationally by 2032. Tree seedling production formed the core agenda of the engagement, supporting efforts to meet the Kenya Defence Forces’ target of planting 450 million trees by 2032.

During the visit, Ms. Kimathi delivered a donation of assorted tree seeds and 20,000 polythene potting bags to support the establishment of a tree nursery at KMC. She further committed the Foundation to providing additional potting bags, seeds, and technical and labour support to ensure the nursery meets the growing demand for seedlings.

KMC has already demonstrated strong commitment to environmental sustainability through tree growing within its premises and the production of fruit tree seedlings. Officials noted that with enhanced partnerships and support, the programme is expected to scale up significantly.

The collaboration underscores the role of public institutions and non-state actors in advancing Kenya’s climate action and forest restoration goals.
