Wetang’ula Hints at Joint Western Political Initiative Ahead of 2027

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has hinted at a joint political initiative with senior Western Kenya leaders aimed at consolidating the region’s influence in national politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wetang’ula said the initiative brings together Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi, Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, and other leaders from the region, with unity as its central pillar.

Speaking on Monday while leading Western Region leaders to condole with the family of former Likuyani Member of Parliament Dr. Enoch Wamalwa Kibunguchy at his Seregeya Village home, the Speaker said leaders from the region had agreed to close ranks and foster cohesion for the benefit of their community.

He emphasized that political unity among leaders was a prerequisite for broader community cohesion and effective engagement at the national level.

“If we are serious about uniting our people, we must first unite ourselves. That is why Mudavadi, Oparanya and I have agreed to put words into action,” Wetang’ula said.

The Speaker noted that the Luhya community could only command meaningful bargaining power in national politics if it spoke with one voice and voted as a bloc, arguing that unity would strengthen the region’s position in shaping national leadership and development priorities.

Wetang’ula also highlighted development projects being undertaken by President William Ruto’s administration in Western Kenya. He cited the resumption of construction works at the Kakamega Level Six Hospital and plans to establish a similar facility in Bungoma County as key investments meant to improve healthcare services in the region.

He urged residents to continue supporting the government’s development agenda, saying sustained backing would help fast-track projects that directly benefit local communities.

During the condolence visit, Wetang’ula mourned the deaths of two prominent Luhya leaders—former Lugari MP and Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo and former Likuyani MP Dr. Kibunguchy—both of whom passed away during the festive season. He described them as seasoned leaders whose contributions to public service and regional politics would be remembered for years to come.
