Truphena Muthoni’s 72-Hour Tree Hug Sets Global Record, Earns Presidential Recognition

Kenya has entered the global spotlight following an extraordinary environmental advocacy feat by Ms. Truphena Muthoni, who set a world record after hugging a tree continuously for 72 hours in a bold statement for climate action and environmental protection.

The remarkable act, widely shared across media platforms, has been hailed as a powerful symbol of love for nature and a call to urgent action against climate change. Through determination and resilience, Ms. Muthoni drew attention to the growing threats facing the planet, inspiring thousands within Kenya and beyond to reflect on their role in environmental conservation.

In recognition of this exceptional achievement, H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya, honored Ms. Muthoni by appointing her an Ambassador of Climate Action. The President also rewarded her with an official trip to Brazil, where she will engage in environmental learning and exchange, as well as a well-deserved holiday vacation.

Speaking on the significance of the recognition, Hon. Josphat Lodeya Lowoi, OGW, Secretary of the Minorities and Marginalized Communities Affairs Unit in the Executive Office of the President, said the gesture underscores the government’s commitment to inclusive leadership and environmental sustainability.

“Ms. Muthoni’s courage demonstrates how individual action can spark national and global conversations on climate change. By recognizing her effort, the President has sent a strong message that climate champions—especially women and youth—matter in shaping our collective future,” Hon. Lowoi said.

He added that climate change continues to disproportionately affect vulnerable and marginalized communities, making grassroots advocacy and public awareness critical to the country’s climate response.

Ms. Muthoni’s appointment aligns with Kenya’s broader climate agenda, which emphasizes environmental conservation, tree growing, and community-led climate solutions. Her story has become a source of inspiration, particularly among young people and communities on the frontlines of climate impacts.

As Kenya strengthens its position as a regional leader in climate action, the recognition of Truphena Muthoni marks a defining moment—demonstrating how passion, resilience, and purpose can translate into national impact and global influence.
