KTB partners with stakeholders to enhance visitor experience in northern kenya during the tobong'u lore festival

 The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), in partnership with the County Government of Turkana and key regional stakeholders, has intensified efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience in Northern Kenya.

Speaking ahead of this year’s celebrations to be unveiled by President William Ruto, the KTB CEO Ms June Chepkemei pointed out the immense tourism potential of the region, highlighting Northern Kenya’s rich cultural heritage as a key attraction for bothdomestic and international visitors.

She noted that cultural events such as the Tobong’u Lore Festival play a vital role in opening up lesser-visited regions while bringing Kenya’s diverse culture to life.

“KTB continues to reposition Kenya beyond the traditional safari and beach experience to include culture, gastronomy, sports tourism, and other unique offerings. Culture is a big part of who we are, and festivals provide a powerful platform to showcase the diversity of our destinations,” said Chepkemei.

She added that Tobong’u Lore also provides an opportunity to highlight Kenya’s historical significance as the home of human origins, given that the region is home to fossil discoveries of global importance.

“Through partnerships with county governments, KTB ensures that once tourism products are developed at the county level, we are able to effectively communicate and market them to potential visitors,” she added.

On connectivity, the CEO noted significant progress in opening up previously hard-to-reach regions, citing improved road infrastructure and the licensing of new airlines.

“We are encouraged by government efforts and commitment to improve access across the country. Road projects such as the Lironi–Mau Summit highway will enhance travel across Western and Rift Valley regions, while the licensing of airlines continues to improve air connectivity. Tourism has a multiplier effect across the economy from small-scale traders to job creation for thousands of Kenyans,” she said.

Turkana Tours, Ekutan Omar, CEO on his part noted a steady increase intourist arrivals into the region in the past couple of years, underscoringTurkana’s growing appeal as a destination of choice.

“We invite visitors to experience the magic that defines this region. Turkana issafe, accessible by road, and served by regular flights, making travelconvenient for both domestic and international tourists. Our partnership withKTB has significantly boosted the visibility of our attractions,” said Omar.

He encouraged families and adventure seekers to visit Turkana and immerse themselves in its diverse excursions, describing the festival as a genuine cultural reunion featuring energetic traditional music, elaborate regalia, and authentic cultural expression.

Now in its 9th edition, Tobong’u Lore, meaning “Welcome Back Home,” is avibrant annual cultural festival held in Turkana County. The event celebrates the rich heritage of the Turkana people and neighboring communities through traditional music, dance, colourful attire, and cultural exhibitions. Thefestival aims to promote peace, unity, cultural preservation, and tourism inthe region.

In 2024, President William Ruto who will be leading this year’s celebrationdeclared Tobong’u Lore a global cultural event, positioning it to attracttourists from across the world and further cement Turkana’s place on Kenya’s tourism map.
