United Opposition Sweeps Nyamira By-Elections as UPA, PDP Candidates Clinch All Three Seats

Candidates aligned with Jubilee Party presidential hopeful Dr. Fred Matiang’i scored a major political victory in the Nyamira County by-elections, winning all three county assembly seats that were up for contest.

In Nyamaiya Ward, Chris Osiemo of the UPA Party emerged victorious after garnering 4,790 votes, defeating Thomas Nyandieka of the UDA Party, who secured 1,357 votes.

In Ekerenyo Ward, Jeremiah Ongaro Njenga of the UPA Party won with 3,507 votes, ahead of Francis Amenya of UDA, who received 2,292 votes.

In Nyansiongo Ward, Jackson Mogusu of the PDP Party clinched the seat with 2,759 votes, narrowly beating Kevin Maranga of the UPA Party, who garnered 2,686 votes.

Although the by-elections recorded isolated incidents of chaos and some candidates complained of voter intimidation, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) said the exercise was concluded successfully.

After receiving his certificate, Ekerenyo Ward MCA–elect Jeremiah Ongaro thanked residents for entrusting him with the mandate to lead.

“I appreciate the confidence you had in me and kept your promise of ensuring I lead you this time. I promise to do my part in ensuring that the people of Ekerenyo Ward get the development services they rightly deserve,” Ongaro said.

The Nyamaiya seat fell vacant following the tragic death of the previous MCA in a road accident. Ekerenyo Ward was declared vacant after its former MCA assumed office as Speaker of the Nyamira County Assembly, replacing former speaker Henry Okero, who had been impeached.

In Nyansiongo Ward, a court ordered a repeat election after an election petition filed by Jackson Mogusu, who has now won the seat.
