Uasin Gishu First Lady Leads Strong Call for Regular Cancer Screening at Meibeki Medical Camp

Uasin Gishu County First Lady Mama Salina Bii has stepped forward as a powerful advocate for cancer prevention, urging residents to embrace regular screening as an essential tool for saving lives through early detection.

Speaking during a breast and cervical cancer medical camp held at Meibeki Health Facility in Karuna/Meibeki Ward, Mama Salina stressed that routine screening remains the most effective strategy in tackling the rising cancer burden in the region. She encouraged both men and women to be proactive about their health, warning that waiting for symptoms often leads to late diagnoses.

Cancer is treatable when detected early. I encourage everyone to go for regular screening — do not wait for symptoms. Early detection can make the difference between life and loss,” she said.

The First Lady noted that despite growing awareness, many residents still seek medical intervention when cancer is already at advanced stages. She emphasized that this challenge can be addressed through consistent community education, increased outreach, and easier access to screening services.

Mama Salina reaffirmed her office’s commitment to championing cancer awareness efforts countywide. Her initiatives will focus on equipping communities with accurate information, dispelling myths, and normalizing preventive health practices.

We must break the silence, end the stigma, and make cancer screening a routine part of our lives. Together, we can build a healthier and more informed society,” she added.

The event comes as Uasin Gishu County continues to deepen collaborations under the Equity in Cancer Care Project, a partnership with Sweden’s Region Östergötland aimed at improving cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment services across the county.

Area Member of County Assembly Hon. James Serem, who was also present, reiterated the urgency of early detection. He stressed that no life should be lost due to late diagnosis when screening tools are readily available.

The medical camp served dozens of residents and forms part of a larger countywide effort to expand access to essential cancer screening and education, reinforcing Uasin Gishu’s commitment to safeguarding the health of its people.
