Natembeya Says Malava By-Election Exposed ‘Grave Flaws’ in Electoral System

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has raised alarm over what he describes as serious irregularities in the Malava by-election, saying the events point to deep challenges within Kenya’s democratic and electoral processes.

In a statement addressed to the nation on Monday, Natembeya alleged that the by-election was marked by intimidation, harassment, heavy security presence, and open voter bribery involving state resources. His claims have not been independently verified by election authorities.

According to the governor, the conditions under which the poll was conducted undermined the credibility of the exercise.

“The Malava by-election has exposed grave flaws in our democracy and electoral integrity,” Natembeya said. “The contest was marred by intimidation, harassment, militarization, and open voter bribery using government resources—tactics that undermine the people’s will.”

Natembeya commended Malava residents for what he called their determination to vote despite the alleged pressure.

“The people of Malava displayed remarkable courage, standing firm against coercion. Their resolve is the true triumph,” he said.

The governor warned that the events in Malava could foreshadow challenges in upcoming national elections.

“If such force and inducements are needed for one by-election, what does it mean for future national polls?” he asked.

Natembeya said he would continue advocating for electoral integrity and reforms through lawful channels.

“Kenyan democracy belongs to the people, and no pressure will change that,” he said.

Election officials and security agencies had not issued a response to Natembeya’s allegations by press time.
