A tragic incident at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret has left the family of Mitchel Wanjiru, a mother of seven, in mourning after she died while giving birth.

According to a Facebook post shared by Sonko TV, Wanjiru passed away during a C-section operation. She left behind seven children, including a two-day-old baby who survived the surgery.

“Let’s hope it was not of negligence,” the post read, reflecting the concern and grief of those following the tragedy.

In addition to coping with their mother’s sudden death, the family faced financial hardships. Their home had been locked due to unpaid rent, but following a KSh 50,000 donation from Sonko, it was reopened to cover immediate expenses.

“The same KSh 50,000 will also cater for their house rent, as the landlord had locked their house due to arrears, a day after the mother was admitted to the hospital,” the post added.

Sonko urged residents of Eldoret and Kenyans at large to support the family both financially and through prayers.

In a related maternal health incident, Lawrence Omondi of the Machozi Ya Mwisho initiative recounted the death of another woman, Eunice Njambi, who passed away after failing to access timely ambulance services to Mama Lucy Hospital. Her husband expressed deep sorrow and uncertainty about how to care for their children.

The Machozi Ya Mwisho initiative highlighted the urgent need for better maternal healthcare access, stressing that timely medical intervention could prevent such tragedies.
