Kenya Met Warns of Continued Rains in November, Flood and Drought Risks Loom

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has announced that the ongoing nationwide rains will persist through November, with varying intensity across different regions of the country.

In its November 2025 Climate Outlook, KMD forecasts near to above average rainfall for the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, and parts of the Central and South Rift Valley. However, the weatherman warns that rainfall will be unevenly distributed, punctuated by intermittent dry spells in several areas.

Conversely, near to below average or depressed rainfall is expected across the Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi), the Southeastern lowlands, the Coast, and most of the Northeastern region.

“Rainfall will be unevenly distributed, with intermittent dry spells in several parts of the country,” the department stated, noting that warmer-than-usual temperatures are likely to persist nationwide.

The KMD cautioned of a high likelihood of flooding in western Kenya due to continued rains falling on already saturated soils, while prolonged dry spells could affect communities in eastern and coastal regions. Residents of the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley and the Lake Basin have been urged to remain vigilant, as moderate rainfall in these areas may trigger flooding or landslides.

The department also issued safety advisories, warning the public against walking or driving through flooded areas and avoiding sheltering under trees or near grilled windows during storms to reduce exposure to lightning strikes.

KMD further highlighted potential health risks linked to the changing weather patterns, including a rise in vector-borne diseases such as malaria in wet regions due to stagnant water, and respiratory infections in dry and dusty areas. Citizens were urged to take preventive health measures and ensure proper drainage in their surroundings.

Meanwhile, residents of Eastern and Coastal Kenya have been encouraged to harvest and store rainwater and adopt efficient water-use practices in anticipation of the expected depressed rainfall.

KMD reiterated its commitment to providing timely weather updates and advised the public to stay informed through official channels to minimize risks and enhance preparedness during this period of climatic variability.
