Kabogo Launches 106km Fiber Optic Link to Boost Internet Connectivity in Baringo County

Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, William Kabogo, has officially launched a 106-kilometer fiber optic link to enhance internet connectivity across remote areas of Baringo County.

Speaking during the launch in Kabartonjo town, CS Kabogo said the new backbone link, spanning Emining-Marigat-Kabarnet-Kabartonjo, will provide reliable voice and internet services to areas that have suffered poor connectivity since independence.

The launch was attended by ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, Governor Benjamin Cheboi, County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa, and Baringo North MP Joseph Makilap, among other leaders. Kabogo described the initiative as a significant step toward digital inclusion in the county.

“The vast areas of Baringo should rapidly expand the fiber network, which is key for driving economic growth and bridging the digital divide,” Kabogo said.

The CS urged the youth to leverage the new internet connectivity to explore digital opportunities and employment prospects, emphasizing the role of technology in economic empowerment. He also highlighted that improved connectivity would enhance the delivery of public services, making it easier for residents to access government services online.

Kabogo expressed confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration’s commitment to the digital economy, calling it a major milestone in the country’s socio-economic development.

Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui revealed that 46 public institutions in the county are already connected to the internet, with plans to link 186 more institutions in collaboration with Kenya Power. Tanui reassured residents that the county would not be left behind in this transformative project.

In his remarks, MP Joseph Makilap praised the government for implementing crucial digital infrastructure, urging for further expansion of internet connectivity to institutions of higher learning to support educational growth in the region.

The fiber optic project is expected to revolutionize internet access in Baringo, empowering residents, supporting business growth, and bridging the digital divide in remote areas.
