Governor Ottichillo Flags Off Distribution of 3,600 Bags of Fish Feeds to Boost Aquaculture in Vihiga County

Vihiga County Governor Dr. Wilber Ottichillo has today presided over the flag-off of a major fish feed distribution exercise under the Advancing Resilient Nutrition Sensitive Aquaculture (ARNSA) project, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

During the event held in Vihiga, Governor Ottichillo handed over a bag of fish feed to a local farmer, symbolizing the official launch of the distribution exercise. The initiative will see 3,600 bags of fish feed distributed to farmers across the county to promote sustainable aquaculture and enhance food security.

The ARNSA project is implemented under the Aquaculture Business Development Programme (ABDP) in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the County Government of Vihiga. Its goal is to strengthen fish farming enterprises, improve nutrition, and uplift livelihoods through modern and resilient aquaculture practices.

Governor Ottichillo announced that each farmer will receive eight bags of fish feed to boost production and encouraged farmers to take advantage of the opportunity to expand their fish farming ventures.

“Fish farming is a promising business venture that can help reduce poverty in our communities,” said Governor Ottichillo. “Apart from improving nutrition, the sale of surplus fish can provide meaningful income to our farmers.”

The governor also revealed plans to establish a fish feed factory in Mwitoko next year as part of a broader strategy to make aquaculture inputs more affordable and locally available.

In addition, he unveiled a five-year aquaculture development programme aimed at enhancing farmer training, improving access to quality inputs, and providing technical support to ensure long-term sustainability of fish farming in Vihiga County.

Governor Ottichillo lauded the continued support from international partners, particularly NORAD and IFAD, for empowering local communities through innovative agricultural interventions.

“This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to sustainable food systems, economic empowerment, and environmental resilience,” he added.
