Traders in Amoyo Protest Four-Month Power Blackout

By Faith Jepleting

Business activities in Amoyo Market have ground to a halt as traders took to the streets to protest a four-month power blackout that has crippled operations in the area.

The irate traders, carrying placards and chanting slogans, accused the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) of neglecting their plight and failing to restore electricity despite numerous complaints. They said the prolonged outage has forced them to close their businesses early, resulting in heavy financial losses.

According to the traders, perishable goods such as meat, milk, and vegetables have gone to waste, while barbershops, salons, and welding shops have been unable to operate.

One trader, Mary Atieno, lamented that the power outage has pushed many young people into unemployment, saying:

“We depend on power for our daily income. Without it, we cannot survive.”

The traders urged the county government and local leaders to intervene and compel KPLC to restore electricity immediately.

Efforts to get a comment from Kenya Power officials were unsuccessful by the time of publishing.
