Tension and fear gripped Kisumu town on Monday evening after police arrested a 21-year-old man alleged to have been involved in a series of armed robberies using an AK-47 rifle.

The dramatic arrest occurred along Otieno Oyoo Street following a brief exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police officers.

According to police sources, officers on patrol had spotted the young man acting suspiciously before he attempted to flee. A shootout ensued, causing panic among residents and traders in the busy area.

After a hot pursuit, the suspect reportedly tried to evade arrest by hiding inside a water tank on the rooftop of a commercial building. However, police cornered and apprehended him after a tense standoff lasting nearly thirty minutes.

Police recovered an AK-47 rifle believed to have been used in a string of robberies across Kondele and Manyatta estates, where several businesses have recently fallen victim to armed attacks. Investigators are working to determine the weapon’s origin and whether it is linked to other criminal networks operating within Kisumu County.

Kisumu County Police Commander confirmed the arrest, noting that preliminary investigations indicate the suspect may be part of a larger gang that has been terrorizing residents.

“We have launched a manhunt for other accomplices who managed to escape during the incident. We will not relent until all suspects are brought to justice,” he said.
