ODM Leaders Caution Against Early Succession Talk After Raila’s Death
By Ivy Nyaboke
Leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have urged politicians from the Luo community to avoid rushing into succession politics following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
During a meeting at Raila’s Opoda Farm home in Bondo, ODM delegates said there is no leadership gap within the party or the community.
ODM national chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga said the community remains united and does not need a hurried search for Raila’s replacement. She emphasized that the focus should be on maintaining unity and respecting the structures already in place.
Wanga affirmed that Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, who has assumed ODM leadership, is well placed to guide both the party and the Luo community during this transition.
Ruaraka MP Kajwang’ warned against youthful leaders seeking to crown themselves as successors, in what seemed to be a veiled message to Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. Kajwang’ said such moves could divide the Luo community and undermine its long-standing unity.
Migori Woman Representative Fatuma Mohamed and Kisumu West MP Rosa Buyu also called for solidarity, saying the community must preserve the unity that Raila stood for.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ added that the community is not “orphaned” by Raila’s death since Dr. Oburu remains a father figure with the wisdom to steer them forward.
