LSK Launches Legal Awareness Week 2025 Under Theme ‘Justice Sector as an Enabler of Impunity’

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has officially launched this year’s Legal Awareness Week, with a bold and introspective theme: “The Justice Sector as an Enabler of Impunity.”

Speaking during the launch in Nairobi, LSK President Faith Odhiambo said the theme challenges justice sector institutions to reflect on how their actions—or inaction—may have contributed to impunity and the erosion of public trust in the justice system.

“This year’s theme calls upon every justice player to reflect on how their mandate has been applied counterproductively to the ends of justice,” Ms. Odhiambo stated. “We must identify and address the gaps that hinder access to justice so that it is not compromised for any Kenyan.”

The event, attended by representatives from key justice sector agencies—including the Judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR)—marks the start of a week-long series of public engagement activities.

Throughout the week, LSK members across the country will offer free legal aid services and hold sensitization forums to educate the public on their legal rights and responsibilities. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between the legal community and the general public, particularly marginalized groups with limited access to justice.

Ms. Odhiambo emphasized the importance of accountability within the justice system, noting that impunity thrives when institutions fail to uphold their constitutional mandates.

“The justice sector must not only administer justice but also be seen to do so fairly and transparently,” she added.

The Legal Awareness Week is an annual event organized by the Law Society of Kenya in partnership with other justice sector stakeholders. It provides a platform for dialogue, civic education, and free legal services to promote access to justice for all Kenyans.

This year’s edition comes at a time when public confidence in some arms of the justice system has been tested by allegations of corruption, delayed cases, and selective enforcement of the law—issues the LSK says must be addressed head-on.
