KANU Leader Kephas Ochieng Condemns Governor Kahiga’s Remarks on Raila’s Death, Calls for Accountability
The Vice-Chairman of the Kenya African National Union (KANU) in Uasin Gishu County, Hon. Kephas Ochieng, has issued a strong statement condemning remarks allegedly made by Nyeri Governor Hon. Mutahi Kahiga concerning the death of Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, terming them disrespectful, discriminatory, and deeply insensitive to the Luo community and to Kenyans at large.
Speaking in Eldoret, Hon. Ochieng said the Governor’s comments were an insult to the legacy of a national hero and a mockery of Kenya’s unity and diversity. He called on Governor Kahiga to take full responsibility for his words and issue an unreserved public apology.
“I strongly condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the remarks made by Governor Kahiga against Raila’s death. His statement is not only in bad taste but also discriminatory to the Luo community,”
said Hon. Ochieng.
“As the Vice Chairman of the Council of Governors, he should uphold the highest standards of integrity and accountability. His conduct falls far below the dignity of that office.”
Hon. Ochieng went further to demand that Governor Kahiga resign from his position as Vice Chair of the Council of Governors, arguing that his comments demonstrate a lack of moral fitness to hold public office.
“He should resign. He is not fit to hold that position. Leadership must be guided by respect, humility, and unity — not divisive and hurtful rhetoric,”
he stated.
The KANU leader urged national and county leaders to promote cohesion, tolerance, and mutual respect, especially at a time when the country continues to mourn the passing of the former Prime Minister.
“Raila Odinga’s contribution to democracy, justice, and devolution is beyond tribe or region. Insulting his memory is an insult to Kenya itself,”
added Ochieng.
He called on relevant institutions and the Council of Governors to take appropriate disciplinary action against Governor Kahiga to preserve the integrity of public leadership.
Hon. Ochieng concluded by urging leaders to honor Raila Odinga’s memory through unity, service, and respect for diversity, saying that Kenya’s heroes should be remembered for their sacrifice and patriotism, not used as subjects of mockery or division.
