Cloud of Grief and Mystery at UoN Kikuyu Campus After Student’s Disappearance
By Sheila Keter
A cloud of sadness and unanswered questions continues to hang over the University of Nairobi’s Kikuyu Campus following the mysterious disappearance of 20-year-old second-year student Jane Atila.
According to reports, Jane went missing on October 3rd after allegedly leaving campus to visit her boyfriend. Since that day, her mobile phone has remained switched off, and she has neither returned to school nor contacted her family.
Her disappearance sparked widespread concern among students, staff, and relatives, who have been conducting frantic searches with the help of police and members of the public.
Police launched investigations immediately after the family filed a missing person’s report. Working in collaboration with telecommunications companies, investigators traced her phone’s last signal to a forested area near Kikuyu town.
After weeks of an intense search, a body believed to be that of Jane Atila was recently discovered in a nearby forest. However, the remains were reportedly decomposed, making visual identification impossible. Authorities have therefore ordered a DNA analysis to confirm whether the body indeed belongs to the missing student.
Jane’s family, who have endured weeks of anguish, say they are now holding on to hope and prayer as they await the DNA results.
“We just want to know the truth,” one of her relatives said. “Whether she is alive or gone, we need closure.”
The University of Nairobi community has expressed shock and sorrow over the development, describing Jane as a bright and friendly student.
Police say investigations are still underway to determine the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and possible death. Meanwhile, the country watches closely as the awaited DNA results may finally bring answers — and closure — to this heartbreaking mystery.
