Leadership Transition at Kenyatta National Hospital Signals New Era of Reforms
A new chapter has begun at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) as top leadership changes were officially unveiled in a ceremony presided over by the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga.
The event marked a significant transition in the management of Kenya’s largest national referral and teaching hospital. Dr. Evanson Kamuri, who has served as CEO, officially handed over the reins to Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, who now takes over as Acting CEO. At the same event, Dr. Abbas Gullet was formally introduced as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Speaking at the handover, Dr. Oluga emphasized that the leadership transition is part of broader health sector reforms spearheaded by the Ministry of Health. The reforms aim to strengthen governance, streamline clinical operations, and enhance administrative efficiency at KNH, a facility that serves millions of Kenyans annually.
“This is a moment of renewal and recommitment to excellence in public health service delivery. We are confident that this new leadership team will steer Kenyatta National Hospital to even greater heights,” said Dr. Oluga.
Dr. Kamuri exits after years of steering the hospital through both challenges and reforms, including the COVID-19 pandemic period. His tenure was noted for efforts to modernize hospital operations and expand service access.
Incoming Acting CEO Dr. Lesiyampe, a seasoned public health administrator and former Principal Secretary for Health, pledged to continue strengthening systems and focus on patient-centered care.
“Kenyatta National Hospital remains a pillar in our healthcare system. I am honored to serve in this capacity and committed to upholding its legacy while driving much-needed reforms,” said Dr. Lesiyampe.
Dr. Abbas Gullet, widely respected for his leadership at the Kenya Red Cross Society, brings to the board a wealth of experience in humanitarian and healthcare leadership. His appointment signals a renewed push toward professionalism, transparency, and stakeholder engagement.
