Joel Ontieri: The Voice Powering Kenya’s Local Football, Politics, and Public Events

In Kenya’s vibrant landscape of sports, politics, and community engagement, few personalities manage to seamlessly navigate all three with the energy, charisma, and consistency of Joel Ontieri, famously known as Mufarisayo. A journalist by training, a master of ceremonies by profession, and a football commentator by passion, Mufarisayo has become a prominent figure in Kenya’s grassroots events, from dusty football pitches in rural tournaments to the grand stages of national celebrations.

Born in Kisii County and raised in Uasin Gishu, Joel Ontieri’s upbringing gave him a diverse cultural grounding, which he credits for his ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. His commanding presence, deep baritone voice, and mastery of Swahili — often spiced with local dialects — have made him a favorite voice across Rift Valley and Western Kenya, and his influence is growing steadily across the country.

The Rise of a Grassroots Commentator

Ontieri’s journey began in local radio and community journalism, where his passion for storytelling met his deep love for sports, especially football. Over the years, he transitioned into live commentary for local football tournaments, quickly carving out a niche for himself in school and community-level competitions. Among the most notable of these is his regular commentary role during the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) Rift Valley Region tournaments — a key feeder program for future stars in Kenyan football.

“It’s not just about announcing the goals. It’s about capturing the emotion, the hustle, the dreams of these young players. This is where the future of Kenyan football is being born,” Mufarisayo often says.

National Recognition Through Talanta Hela

Mufarisayo’s growing reputation culminated in one of the biggest highlights of his career when he was selected as a lead commentator during the Talanta Hela national event held at Nyayo National Stadium. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Sports, aims to identify, nurture, and reward youth talent in sports and the creative economy.

The event attracted high-level dignitaries including President William Ruto, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, former Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, and several county governors. Amid tight security and a packed stadium, Mufarisayo’s voice rang clear — blending professional analysis with witty Swahili metaphors that energized both the crowd and players.

“It was a defining moment for me,” he recalls. “To speak at a national platform in the presence of the President and top leaders — it reminded me that our work at the grassroots is seen, valued, and impactful.”

Corporate and Political Engagements

Beyond sports, Mufarisayo has become a go-to MC for corporate events, roadshows, and political rallies. His skill in reading a crowd, injecting humor, and maintaining flow during live events has made him a favorite for brands and leaders alike.

He is regularly engaged by companies like Betika and SportPesa to anchor their regional football tournaments and activations. His energetic style and on-the-ground connection with youth have made these campaigns highly effective in reaching local communities.

In politics, he holds the coveted role of official MC for Kapseret Member of Parliament, Hon. Oscar Sudi. He has hosted numerous political events, development forums, and campaign rallies, often doubling as a political analyst on local radio and TV.

A Bridge Between the Grassroots and the National Stage

What sets Mufarisayo apart is his ability to elevate community narratives to national consciousness. He represents a growing wave of Kenyan media professionals who are not confined to traditional studio roles but are actively engaging with the public in real time and in real spaces.

He uses his platform not just for entertainment, but also for advocacy — urging young people to take education seriously, avoid drugs, and use their talents positively. His brand of “edu-tainment” has made him a role model in many rural areas.

Looking Ahead

Despite his rising fame, Joel Ontieri remains deeply connected to his roots. He continues to mentor young MCs and journalists, many of whom look up to him as proof that one can start from humble beginnings and rise to national influence.

“I always say — never underestimate the power of your voice. If you use it with purpose and integrity, people will listen,” he says.
