Interventional Radiology Simulator Marks Major Step Towards Expanding Interventional Radiology Access in Kenya

‎Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), in partnership with Siemens Healthineers, Elsmed Kenya, and AMPATH, on Tuesday celebrated the donation of a state-of-the-art Mentice simulator—a milestone in strengthening access to Interventional Radiology (IR) in Kenya.

‎The simulator will be used to train clinicians on minimally invasive procedures that offer safer and more efficient treatment options for patients.

‎

‎Interventional Radiology uses imaging to guide treatments through tiny incisions, offering a less invasive alternative to conventional surgery. 

‎

‎It plays a critical role in managing conditions such as abscesses, trauma-related internal bleeding, diabetic vascular disease, uterine fibroids, and cancer—where techniques like embolization can block blood flow to tumors.

‎

‎These procedures typically result in less pain, fewer complications, and faster recovery, often eliminating the need for hospital stays; leading to better outcomes for patients, and reduced strain on the healthcare system.

‎

‎The Mentice simulator will support hands-on training and is part of a broader initiative to establish a Centre of Excellence in Interventional Radiology at MTRH, alongside the development of a university-level curriculum to train future IR specialists through Moi University College of Health Sciences.

‎MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa affirmed that  the IR Centre of Excellence will immensely improve the skills and Human Resources for Health through the trainings and mentorship programs.
