United Opposition Accuasss Ruri Regime of Tyranny, Corruption, and Attempted Assassinations
In a strongly worded statement issued today from Liberation House, the United Opposition leaders in Kenya launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto’s administration, accusing it of orchestrating political violence, corruption, and undermining constitutional freedoms.
Flanked by key opposition figures wearing black armbands in memory of victims of police brutality, the coalition, operating under the rallying call #WanTam—a Swahili phrase loosely translated as "we want change"—declared that the country is under siege from what they termed a "tyrannically inept" and “illegitimate” government.
Assassination Claims and Police Violence
The opposition claimed that members of their coalition were recently targeted in a deadly attack while engaging with the public in Murang’a County. They alleged that bullets fired at their convoy were meant to assassinate Senator Methu and Hon. Victor Munyaka.
“This was no random police shooting,” the statement read. “Specific vehicles were targeted. We are lucky not to be mourning our colleagues today.”
The opposition presented what they called "irrefutable evidence" of the attack to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), calling for the immediate accountability of the police command, including Inspector General Douglas Kanja and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen.
Sugar Scandal and Public Health Risk
In a separate allegation, the opposition disclosed that 25,000 metric tonnes of sugar deemed unfit for human consumption had been cleared by government authorities and rerouted to a Western Kenya factory for repackaging.
"This is a crime against the health and safety of the Kenyan people," the leaders declared, demanding the immediate public destruction of the sugar consignment. They accused the Ruto government of “placing profit over public welfare.”
Attack on Free Education
Another central issue in the opposition’s statement was the government’s move to scale down funding for basic education. Citing recent comments by Treasury CS John Mbadi, the opposition warned that cuts to capitation funds threaten the constitutional guarantee of free primary and secondary education.
“The Constitution is clear,” the leaders argued, citing Article 43(1)(f) and Article 53(1)(b). “Education is not a privilege. It is a right. Defunding it is both illegal and immoral.”
Allegations of Economic Sabotage
Beyond the alleged physical and social attacks, the opposition condemned what they called the regime’s “criminal economic schemes,” including the securitisation of future taxes and the use of secretive Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to siphon public funds.
“These murky financial arrangements bypass Parliament and the Auditor-General, effectively auctioning our children’s future,” the statement said. “This is not governance—it is economic sabotage.”
Demands and Next Steps
The opposition issued a four-point ultimatum to the government:
- Parliament must immediately halt the securitisation of public taxes.
- An independent audit of all SPVs managing public funds must be undertaken.
- Full funding for free education must be restored and guaranteed.
- Kenyans must unite in civic action, legal resistance, and organised protest.
Call to Action
In their closing remarks, the opposition vowed to intensify their resistance and mobilise the nation. They insisted that their campaign is not just about electoral politics, but a struggle to save the soul of the nation.
“This is not about parties. It is about people. It is about justice. It is about the survival of our republic,” they said. “Mr. Ruto, you are on borrowed time.”
The event ended with a moment of silence and the lighting of candles for those who lost their lives to police violence—a symbolic gesture underscoring the seriousness of the opposition’s message.
As Kenya navigates this tense political season, the country awaits a response from State House, IPOA, and other key institutions. Whether this latest showdown leads to dialogue, investigations, or deeper political rifts remains to be seen.
