Uasin Gishu County Boosts Climate Resilience with Premium Pasture Seed Distribution in Moiben

In a major step toward sustainable agriculture and climate resilience, the Uasin Gishu County Government today distributed premium pasture seeds to farmers in Moiben Sub-County under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) program.

The event, held at the Moiben Sub-County offices, brought together farmers from four cooperative societies—Ngokim FCS, Mumetet FCS, Moiben FCS, and Taachmoi FCS—who welcomed the initiative as a timely intervention to boost livestock productivity and secure their livelihoods amid changing climate conditions.

The distribution is part of a broader county strategy to support climate-smart agriculture, as outlined by Governor Jonathan Bii’s administration, which has prioritized farmer empowerment, food security, and sustainable land use.

Speaking during the event, Ward Administrator Mr. Herbert Tanui and FLLoCA Coordinator Ms. Abigael Kibet applauded the project’s impact and urged farmers to maximize the opportunity by properly planting and managing the improved pasture.

“Once you achieve a substantial harvest, consider developing a proposal to acquire equipment for value addition,” they advised. “This will enable you to process, package, and sell animal feeds, ultimately enhancing your income and livelihood.”

Mr. Bill Matelong, Climate Change Unit Officer for Moiben, emphasized the significance of pasture quality in both adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change. He linked the initiative to the county’s "Maziwa ni School Fees" campaign, which encourages families to use proceeds from milk sales to support education.

“Improved pasture will translate into higher milk yields,” Matelong noted. “This means more income for families and more children staying in school.”

The high-quality seeds are expected to improve both the quantity and nutritional value of livestock feed, translating into better milk and meat production. With livestock being a key economic activity in the region, the program is seen as a vital step in boosting local incomes and enhancing food security.

Farmers expressed optimism that with continued support and access to modern farming resources, they will be better equipped to navigate the challenges posed by climate change.

This latest FLLoCA intervention underlines Uasin Gishu’s commitment to building climate-resilient communities through grassroots-driven development and sustainable agricultural practices.
