Sofia Situation Appointed Acting Registrar of Political Parties
By Ernest Bandi
Sophia Sitati has officially taken over as the Acting Registrar of Political Parties, following the departure of Ann Nderitu, who has been appointed as a commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Sitati began her new role on Monday, bringing with her extensive legal and public service experience. She previously served as Chief State Counsel in the Office of the Attorney General. Her appointment marks a new chapter for the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP), a critical institution in Kenya's democratic framework.
In a statement released by the ORPP, Sitati was described as a “seasoned legal practitioner” whose career in government has prepared her well for the task ahead.
“Sitati brings to ORPP a wealth of expertise and experience, having served in various portfolios in Government,” the statement read.
Sitati was formally welcomed by her predecessor, Ann Nderitu, on July 15 at the ORPP headquarters in Nairobi. During the handover, Sitati met with the staff and the management team as she assumed leadership of the institution.
The ORPP praised Nderitu’s leadership during her seven-year tenure, highlighting her role in building a strong institutional foundation.
“She laid ORPP’s institutional foundation, such as human capital development, stakeholder engagements, legal and ICT reforms,” the office stated, acknowledging her efforts to transform the ORPP into a respected body both within Kenya and on the international stage.
“These initiatives have led to effective execution of the Office mandate and progressed democratic governance in Kenya,” the statement added.
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties was established in 2008 to register and oversee political parties in Kenya. As Acting Registrar, Sitati will now lead the team in upholding political accountability and strengthening multiparty democracy in the country.
Her leadership is expected to ensure continuity in the office's mandate while navigating the complex dynamics of Kenya’s political landscape ahead of the next general election cycle.
