Making Iten Green: County Launches Tree Planting Campaign to Support National Goal
Elgeyo Marakwet County has launched a major tree planting initiative in Iten town, in support of the national government’s ambitious plan to grow 15 billion trees by 2032. The effort, carried out in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross, aims to green urban spaces and promote environmental conservation within Iten Municipality.
The launch event drew participation from key county officials, Kenya Red Cross representatives, and community stakeholders. Among those present were County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Environment Thomas Maiyo, Chief Officer Emmanuel Birir, Municipal Manager Felix Kirongo, Kenya Red Cross Elgeyo Marakwet Coordinator Abraham Kiptoo, members of the Municipal Board, county staff, and other invited guests.
Speaking during the exercise, officials emphasized the need for sustainable environmental practices and called on the local community to take an active role in maintaining the trees. Participants were encouraged to adopt a sense of ownership over the seedlings planted, with a call to become ambassadors for environmental stewardship.
“This is not just a one-day event. It's a call for long-term commitment to restoring our environment and making Iten a model green town,” said CEC Thomas Maiyo.
The initiative highlights the power of collaboration between government institutions and civil society in addressing climate change and urban deforestation. It also reinforces the county’s commitment to playing its part in the broader national reforestation strategy.
Municipal Manager Felix Kirongo noted that greening Iten will not only improve the town’s aesthetics but also enhance air quality, mitigate the effects of climate change, and provide shaded public spaces.
The campaign will continue in phases, targeting schools, public institutions, and road reserves within the municipality. The County Government has urged residents to join future planting drives and support the survival of the trees through regular watering and protection from vandalism.
