Kenyan Comedian Mr KK Mwenyewe Dies After Brief Illness at Kiambu Hospital
Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr KK Mwenyewe and celebrated for his brilliant impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, passed away late Monday at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital following a short illness.
Kariuki, whose comedic talent brought laughter and critical reflection through satire, was admitted to the hospital last week and had been receiving intensive treatment. “He had a brief but severe illness,” confirmed a close friend and fellow comedian. He succumbed to complications during treatment, leaving family, friends, and fans in mourning.
Best known for his viral skits in which he captured Gachagua’s mannerisms and speech with uncanny precision, Kariuki rose to national attention in 2022. His bold performances resonated widely, offering both humour and social commentary . Though he once hoped the former deputy president would recognize his talent, official acknowledgement never materialized.
Following news of his death, tributes poured in from across Kenya’s entertainment scene and political circles. “Rest in peace brother, you will forever be in our hearts,” tweeted one of his collaborators, expressing collective grief. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah offered a moving tribute, calling Kariuki “a courageous and talented artist whose work resonated with a generation” and “not just a comedian, but a cultural commentator and a brave young patriot”.
The loss of Zakaria Kariuki is deeply felt across the creative landscape. He leaves behind a legacy of sharp wit, fearless satire, and an unwavering capacity to make Kenyans laugh while challenging them to think.
