Fake Cop Busted with Police Gear in Kirinyaga
Detectives in Kirinyaga East Sub-County have arrested a man posing as a police officer and recovered several items of government-issued police gear. The suspect, identified as Newton Wachira Waweru, was apprehended following intelligence reports that led officers to launch an operation targeting suspected impersonators. Upon arrest, Waweru was interrogated and subsequently led detectives to his residence in the Makongeni area of Thika.
A search of his home revealed a trove of police-related items, including two police smoke jackets, two jungle green trousers, a green prison lanyard, desert military boots, and a replica firearm. Authorities believe these items were being used to impersonate a police officer, though investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of his activities. Waweru was immediately taken into custody alongside the recovered items and is currently undergoing processing as detectives prepare to present him in court.
Police have launched a broader investigation to establish whether Waweru may have been involved in criminal activities under the guise of law enforcement. A senior officer involved in the case emphasized the seriousness of such offenses, noting that impersonating police not only undermines public trust but can also pose a serious threat to citizen safety. Members of the public are being urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals claiming to be police officers without proper identification.
