Eldoret Man Shocks Court by Admitting Bhang Trade Is His Only Source of Income

A middle-aged man stunned a courtroom in Eldoret on Monday after boldly admitting that selling bhang is his sole source of livelihood.
Geoffrey Wanjala was arraigned before Eldoret Resident Magistrate Daniel Sitati following his arrest on June 26, 2025. He was apprehended at his residence in the Lower West Indies area, located on the outskirts of Eldoret’s central business district.
According to a police report presented in court, Wanjala attempted to flee upon spotting officers from Central Police Station but was quickly subdued. Law enforcement officers recovered a substance suspected to be bhang during the operation, which was triggered by tip-offs from members of the public regarding suspicious activity at his home.
In a surprising confession before the magistrate, Wanjala openly stated that he has been dealing in bhang for an extended period and relies on the trade as his only means of survival.
The prosecution, led by State Counsel Eric Waweru, requested that the accused be remanded for two weeks to allow the government chemist sufficient time to analyze the seized substance and confirm its composition.
Magistrate Sitati granted the request and ordered that Wanjala be detained at Eldoret GK Remand Prison until July 14, 2025, when the government chemist’s report is expected to be presented in court.
The case has attracted significant public interest, shedding light on the growing issue of drug-related activities within Eldoret and its surrounding areas. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to cracking down on illegal drug trade, citing community cooperation as a key factor in ongoing enforcement efforts.
