MP Chepkonga Accused of Abusing Teachers at Biwot Ngelel Tarit Secondary School
Tensions are high at Biwot Ngelel Tarit Secondary School after a controversial incident involving the area Member of Parliament, Hon. Samuel Chepkonga, during a parent-teacher-student meeting held on Saturday, July 5th, 2025.
According to a statement from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Uasin Gishu County branch, the MP allegedly insulted and verbally abused teachers during the meeting, referring to them as “fools” and claiming he had the authority to transfer them, citing his position as the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) representative on the ground.
The meeting, originally convened to address student grievances, took a dramatic turn when Hon. Chepkonga allegedly shifted the discussion to criticize the teachers in what has been described as a demeaning and humiliating tone.
In an official communication to education stakeholders, KUPPET Uasin Gishu Secretary Elijah Kimeli Maiyo expressed outrage over the incident, stating that the MP's conduct had severely damaged the morale and reputation of the teaching staff both within and outside the school.
“I am unable to quantify the humiliation, embarrassment, and mockery facing the teachers following these unfortunate utterances by the area MP,” read the statement from Maiyo.
The union has demanded a formal public apology from Hon. Chepkonga, to be issued in the presence of both parents and students. Until then, teachers at Biwot Ngelel Tarit Secondary School have been instructed to report to school but not to perform any teaching duties as a form of protest.
The directive is expected to significantly disrupt learning at the institution, raising concerns among parents and education officials about the welfare of students.
Efforts to reach Hon. Chepkonga for comment were unsuccessful by the time of publication.
KUPPET has called on the Teachers Service Commission and the Ministry of Education to urgently intervene and restore dignity and order at the school. The union has also warned that similar incidents of political interference in education will not be tolerated.
The story continues to unfold as stakeholders await the MP’s response and the Ministry’s position on the matter.
